By Patrick Chierichella

Educational Coordinator, The Rose Brucia Educational Foundation

I am always fascinated by the ads that announce new toys hitting the market. After all, a grandfather has to keep current with what is hip for the kids. Legos are the big, big toy in our family. This corporation has wisely started marketing toys especially for girls! About time, too!

In 1960, the Ideal Toy Company put out a new toy: a walking and sound producing mechanical man known as Mr. Machine. Wind him up and watch him go! With a rather narrow “head” and boxy body with arms that moved in sync with his circular legs, Mr. Machine became all the rage. I remember a comedian using the toy for a punch line. As I recall, the comic was going on about how kids of that generation never owned up to some misbehavior or transgression. He said he knew of a father who, upon hearing some crash in the next room, went to investigate. The father found his son staring at a football that had obviously smashed a lamp. The father said, “What happened?” The son replied, “It wasn’t me, dad. Mr. Machine did it!”

Sally L. Satel, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and a lecturer in psychiatry at the Yale school of Medicine, wrote an essay in the Sunday, February 24, 2013, New York Times, titled Primed for Controversy. Ms. Satel wrote about “the goal-priming effect…the power of subtle cues to influence our attitudes and actions.” What struck me was the following statement: “Furthermore, goal priming carries an exculpatory whiff of ‘don’t blame me, blame my brain’-or better yet, ‘blame the world around me’. After all, if stimuli we are not aware of can influence us, then perhaps we are not as accountable for our actions as others might want to hold us.”(The emphasis is mine.)

This opinion is not confined to our shores. A Catholic prelate from Africa also disturbingly misspoke about an issue. “From my experience, pedophilia is actually an illness. It’s not a criminal condition, it’s an illness,” said Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier, Archbishop of Durban, South Africa, quoted in a report by Reuters. The firestorm of outrage that followed his statement brought about a subsequent apology for his remarks and an offer of total assistance by the Church to any victim of abuse.

EXCULPATORY???? I became extremely uncomfortable reading both these statements. If the mind and body respond to cues in the environment without thinking, I guess the old reptilian brain is at work and control is out of the question. I guess everything is stimulus-response. No reflective consideration of what I am doing; just a genetic predisposition to some action. Or, in a rather facile explanation, I am sick. I was preyed upon, so now I do the preying. Either way, I am guiltless.

The idea of “I couldn’t help myself” is not new. The abductor in the film M uses this defense to explain his crimes to a jury of criminals. In the movie, 360, one character, a level 3 sexual predator, is released from prison and must fight his inclinations to act upon his predilections in a far too unsettling scene involving a young girl.

So an abductor has a built-in excuse: My wiring is different than yours. Is it any wonder why I, and the rest of the people at our Foundation, urge you to arm your children with skills to protect them from these predators? Abduction, exploitation, and things far worse to consider are what we adults must face. Our children must be taught, in non-threatening ways, how to deal with people who do not have their health and safety in mind. Check out our lessons online. Ask your school if there are lessons about stranger safety awareness taught throughout the year, not just at Halloween.

I know when I say to my grandkids, “Have a great day,” I am really praying they come home safely. It is uncomfortable to have to face such an issue. I would prefer we adults face it, rather than our children fall victim to it.

By Patrick M. Chierichella

Educational Coordinator

The Rose Brucia Educational Foundation

I enjoy the Sunday edition of the New York Times. I look forward to the various sections: Arts and Leisure, Week in Review, Sports, the Magazine and Travel. But most of all, I love reading the Book Review. While I do not rush out and buy every title that catches my eye, I find that I do go to the library and look for titles to which the reviewers refer in their opinion piece. Of late, I came across a review of An Enlarged Heart by Cynthia Zarin. What struck me was the quote excerpted from her work that the reviewer boldly placed in the middle of the article. “We learn more than we ever wanted to know about things we wish we’d never heard of,” Zarin writes. THAT sentence caught my eye.

“Live and learn!” Wasn’t that one of those adages our parents were fond of?

Be too trusting of a friend or even a relative – Live and learn!

Don’t study for a test - Live and learn!

Forget to fill the gas tank for that barbecue – Live and learn!

That used car salesman you trusted?

I’m sure you’ve heard these words before: “should have, could have, would have”.

You are the primary teacher of your child/children. You teach them to talk, to learn their ABC’s, to learn to count. You teach them fundamentals for sport, dance, social skills and personal hygiene. I smile when I see the car commercial in which a father is teaching his son how to throw a baseball. It is at once touching, awkward, even painful, but still a life lesson: a father teaching a skill to his son. Isn’t it amazing how children will do their utmost to copy their parent? Do you practice EDITH (Exit Drills in the House)? I remember reviewing this strategy with my children over 35 years ago.

Do you work on this necessary awareness skill? Can your child/children describe their personal space? A simple activity such as having the child stand with arms stretched to the sides is a good start in attaining a working definition of personal space. Have the child turn in a circular path. The area contained within this circle is the child’s personal space. Show the child your personal space. Have the child compare the two areas. Kristyn Crow blogs Activities that Teach. She proposes the following: Explain that this area is his “personal space.” Now you do the same and demonstrate “your” space. This helps the child to visualize what the space “looks” like. Now put your arms down at your sides and have your child slowly walk toward you. Tell him to stop just before he thinks he has reached the edge of your personal space. When he stops to make his guess, raise your arms out straight and slowly turn in place. If you bump him with your arm, he has to try again.

Ask the child who should be allowed into their personal space.

Ask the child a reason for letting those people into that space.

Impress upon the child the need to keep another person’s space from touching or overlapping his/her space, especially if the child does not know the person, be it man, woman or child.

Make it similar to a game of tag: you the adult are “IT” and if your personal space touches the child’s personal space, the child becomes “IT”. As the child becomes adept at avoiding being tagged, change the emphasis to increasing the time he/she avoids being tagged. This activity is simple and easily taught.

Why urge teaching young children such skills? The world changes minute by minute. Our children and grandchildren live in a world fraught with peril. In the fall of 2012, there were numerous reported incidences of attempted child abductions in Bergen County, New Jersey. In October 2012, Jessica Ridgeway was abducted and murdered in Colorado. Again, in October of 2012, Autumn Pasquale was abducted and murdered in Gloucester County, New Jersey. Recently, in Deer Park, New York, there were reported incidents of children on the way to school being approached by strangers in cars. It doesn’t stop.

This awareness teaching has to begin early and be reinforced throughout a child’s life. The odds for dire consequences are statistically long. Would any of us like to be on the losing end of a bet about our children’s safety? A friend of mine, a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach and a member of the staff of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, always has some thought-provoking statement on her website. She quotes John Wooden: If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

That is so applicable to the issue at hand. Our children’s safety is of paramount concern. We have to get it right! That’s why we are here. Our special thanks to the Parkville Elementary School of the Great Neck Public School for trusting us to present our program at a PTO meeting that was attended, not only by concerned parents and teachers at the site, but also by superintendent Thomas Dolan and members of his central office administration. Our program does not succeed without the trust and support of parents such as: Maria Angelaras, president of the Parkville PTO; principal Debra Shalom and social worker Judi Kohn. They had enough faith in us to ask us to put on two performances of our introductory lessons to the pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes. To the staff at Parkville, a huge Thanks! After our most recent performance, a teacher approached us and applauded our efforts. I said, “I hope you will have us back.” I got the words I wanted to hear: Oh, you will be back here!

Let us help.

In any language: Have a Safe Trip!

By Patrick M. Chierichella

Educational Coordinator of The Rose Brucia Educational Foundation

It’s that time of year once again. Presidents’ Week is upon us. In five or six weeks, spring recess will be here. And with these two vacation periods comes the anxiety of preparations: booking airline tickets, securing that time share slot, praying snow will not impact departure or return, and hoping and praying that everyone will just relax and have a good time. One other important thing to check off in your preparatory list: going over stranger safety awareness pointers with your children no matter their age.

A short while ago, my wife was shopping in a neighboring Long Island village. She saw a gentleman with his children, a boy and a girl. About to enter a store, the man turned to his son who was finishing a drink. “Stay out here until you’re done. Then come in and find us.” The little girl said to her dad, “But daddy, someone could take him.” The father’s response: “That doesn’t happen where we live.” But, of course it does. To account for over 800,000 children reported missing in the United States annually, it has to happen here.

This does not even come close to the instances of child abduction world-wide. Let me ask you a few questions. How safe is the specific destination where you and your family will stay? Have you researched your vacation destination for any recent stories about abductions? Have you gone on the web and checked out sources concerning the number of abductions attributed to the country you are entering? A recent travel alert said that CHILDREN are acting as abductors in foreign lands. Have you reviewed stranger safety awareness skills that you have taught your child/children? Do your older children have curfews?

Natalie Holloway, on a trip celebrating her recent graduation from high school, disappeared in 2005 in Aruba. Madeline McCann disappeared at a resort in Portugal in 2007. Such instances propel us to generate rapid learning curves. The questions are simple: Did we learn for the short-term or long-term? How many of you remembered the generalities about these cases but not these names? The disappearances of the teenager and young child garnered world-wide notoriety. Did either or both of these cases prompt you to develop and use stranger safety awareness stratagems with your family? Remember, the goal for a child, for each of us, is not to just say what the stratagem is but to produce an instinctual response mechanism that moves your child out of harm’s way. Practice indeed makes the lesson ingrained.

We, at the Rose Brucia Educational Foundation, know you protect your child/children. We hope that our program and strategies can help you be better prepared for the world in which we live.

Enjoy your day in the sun, on the slopes, on the links, at those fantastic restaurants and venues wherever you go. Do not take your safety for granted.

By Patrick M. Chierichella

Educational coordinator The Rose Brucia Educational Foundation

An estimated 800,000 children are reported missing every year. That is 2,000 every day or one child every 40 seconds. In the time it takes me to compose and edit this essay, 45 children will be abducted in our country! The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) analyzed more than 4,200 attempted abductions for the five year period from February 2005 to March 2010 and found that:

38% of attempted abductions occur while a child is walking alone to or from school, riding the school bus or riding a bicycle.

37% of attempted abductions occur between the hours of 2:00 PM through 7:00 PM on a weekday.

43% of attempted abductions involve children between the ages of 10 and 14.

72% of attempted abduction victims are female.

68% of attempted abductions involve the suspect driving a vehicle.

Additional analysis of data suggests the abductor is usually a white male about 27 years of age. Also, the first contact between victim and potential abductor occurs more than half of the time near the victim’s residence. While this information is readily available through a simple Internet search, the question of how and when we are developing a skill set in our children to help thwart abductions remains woefully unanswered.

Assuredly, there are numerous communities addressing child safety through the actions of parent-teacher groups. Is stranger safety awareness skill development an integral part of your school district’s curriculum? No one wants more responsibilities piled on their plate. Who wants to do the research and development for a plan to stress awareness skills? Obviously we do!

Our goal is to develop an educational plan that is embedded in New York State Teaching Standards. Our rationale is simple and straightforward: start including awareness safety lessons early in a child’s educational career and build on this foundation through middle school. We believe effective communication is the key. We urge parents, guardians, teachers, and administrators to visit our website and review our lesson plans and videos. Hey, wherever possible, we’ll even come to your PTA/PTO meetings to speak to your group. We’ll visit your school and present our puppet show to your younger grades. Please understand that this is our mission. There is no burden of cost to you or your group for what we do. Use us!

I re-read an article in The Palm Beach Post from February 4, 2012. It relates the sentencing of yet another child abductor and murderer in Florida. The 26 year-old had lured the child walking home from school into his yard under the pretext of petting his dog. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The victim’s mother said, “No punishment given to you will be good enough to soother our spirits.” A poem by Dale Furutami can but approach the grief of such loss.

The pain of good bye

lingers far longer than the

parting of our souls.

And we don’t have enough time in the educational year to teach our children awareness skills?

By Patrick Chierichella, Educational Coordinator

New Year’s resolutions take many forms: losing weight, repairing family relationships, reconnecting with old friends, beginning and adhering to exercise regimens, enrolling in some adult education program to learn a new language, saving more and spending less. You can add to this list, of that I’m sure. Maybe you’ll work on your golf swing, lower you handicap. Perhaps your serve or volley can be improved in that tennis game of yours. It just takes time and dedication. You know the old chestnut? How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice! Practice! Practice!

I’ve found myself watching some movies, old and new, as I wait for the flu to exit the family. One is the Fritz Lang classic, M, from 1931. This German film recounts the efforts by both the police and the city’s criminal element to apprehend a child murderer. The beginning of the film illustrates feints, shams, ploys used by the abductor to lure the children to their fates. He uses simple gifts of candy, smiles, and balloons as offers for the children to willingly walk away hand in hand with him. The scenes of the abduction are harrowing. The pursuit of the fiend is intense. The last scene focuses on mothers of murdered children clothed head to toe in black, their faces alone offering any respite from the stark black backdrop, admonishing the audience, “You must watch out for the children.”

A newer movie, a TV film, is Under/Over, a pilot for a proposed USA series. Something in the film made me upset. If the scene was to be comic relief, the scriptwriter chose an uncomfortable way to produce at best a nervous laugh from some people. The “hero” of the story is sitting on a bench overlooking the East River. Several feet away a young boy is sitting with his mother and younger sibling. The mother’s attention is on the younger child. The older boy, one of those incredibly articulate and forthright children we see so often in film, approaches the gentleman on the bench. He says without hesitation to the man, “Where is your baby?” The man responds, “I don’t have a baby.” “Then,” the child replies “are you a sexual predator?” The man says, “There are so many ways for me to answer that!”

Eighty-two years between films and look how cavalier the attitude has become as our societies become more complex. Unmitigated grief and jaded humor contrasted. I am not confusing the quality of the films, but rather the attitudes towards the question of sexual predation. Name a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, godparent, cousin, psychologist, social worker, police officer, who thinks the issue of child predation is a joking matter!

Over the years, we have learned that newborns at birth have some instinctual reactions: hot and cold, response to touch, itch, and blinking. Nature provides from the moment of birth. Other reactions are obviously learned. These learned reactions can be improved throughout a lifetime. But that improvement requires mentoring, an urging to be better at what one is doing.

Without doubt, you are the first and the most influential teacher in the development of your children. You feed and nurture them along the growth continuum that leads to their entry into their adulthood. You have taught them to walk, to socialize, and to talk, which some educational psychologists say is the single most difficult activity your children encounter before entry into school. Parenting is nerve-wracking, difficult and fulfilling. You have the memories to prove it.

Others have different memories, decidedly more painful ones. Child abduction is an issue that will not go away. Congress passed into law the Missing Children Act in 1982. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was created in 1984. Amber Alerts are part of our national lexicon. Abductions continue. Check your local newspapers and you’ll see a small article every so often about children disappearing throughout our nation. These, such as Carlie Brucia who have been murdered, and every exploited child who has not been reunited with their family, are tragic examples of what can happen in one moment.

Please practice the Stranger Safety Awareness skills presented to your children during the simple lessons provided by RBEF.

Ensure your children know who strangers are.

Practice the correct and safe way to deal with strangers at the door.

Select a secret word/password for identification of trusted adults or teenagers by your children.

Instill the proper way of dealing with being lost at the mall or in a big store.

Go over the proper response to an emergency.

Model the mirroring technique for maintaining a safe distance from a stranger.

You sit with your children and go over their daily homework assignments. You help them with their long-term projects. In a perfect world child protection would not be a concern. That concern must be addressed by all of us. The Rose Brucia Educational Foundation asks that your family review the principles of Stranger Safety Awareness long after the lessons have been presented. It is our belief it does make a difference.

By Matthew Barbis

Well, the holiday shopping season is about to open. What a fun time to visit your favorite stores, decorated with beautiful holiday trimmings. Although this is a very festive time of year, we must always remember that it can be a very dangerous time for children. With all the hustle and bustle of people shopping, long lines and sales, there is a small possibility of your child becoming separated from you. Here are a few stranger safety awareness tips that you can share with your children to prepare them for that possibility:

If your child becomes separated from you, teach them to:

Look for an employee wearing a name tag or uniform

Never leave the area where they discover they have become separated

Never let a stranger take them by the hand – whether it is a man, women or even another child

If a stranger does take them by the hand, have them yell the word “STRANGER” over and over, as loud as possible

To avoid becoming separated from you, teach them that shopping is the best time for them to practice the Buddy System – always going somewhere with a friend. Make it a game that they are not to let go of your hand until you both reach the car at the conclusion of shopping. Perhaps you can offer them a reward of some kind when they successfully reach the car – maybe the opportunity to listen to their favorite station or song on the radio, a favorite show on DVD for the ride home, or a special dessert item when they get home.

The more comfortable you can make it for your children to practice these tips and the more you repeat them, the more calm your children may remain if they are ever placed in a situation where they become separated from you.

Please feel free to download the lesson plan for “One is a Lonely Number” on our free curriculum page. The more you practice stranger safety awareness with your children, the better they will be prepared if a dangerous situation presents itself!
