About The Rose Brucia Educational Foundation

Founded by Matthew J. Barbis after his 11-year-old cousin, Carlie Brucia, was abducted and murdered in Sarasota, FL in 2004. The Rose Brucia Educational Foundation’s goal is to reduce the number of child abductions in the U.S. by educating and empowering young minds with the knowledge necessary to avoid abduction. Utilizing puppets and a formalized educational curriculum, the foundation provides elementary-aged children with the Stranger Safety Awareness Program, free of charge. The Rose Brucia Educational Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Thank you very much for your support!

  1. Jennifer Staley-Hatter says:

My heartfelt prayers and sympathy are still with the family of the beautiful Carlie Brucia, even after all these years. I shed many tears when this story aired on the news channels & I prayed her abductor be caught and put under the jail. I wept when the word came in about the discovery of her body. How could this be? He walked up & grabbed her, and walked away! I was working as a sales manager at a local fitness gym at the time and I was so heartbroken over the visual images from the car wash video that kept playing in my head like a movie that I couldn’t turn off! My eyes watered every time I saw the last few moments of this young girl’s life flash through my head! I spoke with my mother about the thoughts that had plagued me and she made a comment to me that made my blood boil! I will never forget it as long as I live. My Mother had taken a self defense class prior to our conversation and the words that she said to me that day set in motion a course of events that seemed to heal my hurt temporarily. What she said was, “Jennifer, I saw that on tv and that was just so sad! And you know something else, that hold that he had her arm in is one of the easiest to get out of!” So my anger & pain turned to determination and purpose. I knew instantly what I had to do….through my gym, I wanted to start a beginners self-defense course offered by a professional I would hire and would offer one night a week to the parents of any school age children, members of the gym or not. I needed to start this for Carlie, myself and all the other kids in this country. I was going to call it Carlie’s Class and start off my class with her story and the video of her abduction. I needed to do this! I started a sign up sheet at the gym and was going to charge a minimal fee only pertaining to the cost of the professional I would hire. Everything else would be free, including use of the gym and my time. I ran everything across my manager and got the green light to proceed! Wow! We were in and I was making a difference already! Our sign up sheet was getting full and of the few members I was able to talk to, they were asking not only for the kids in their family to join but some friends of their kids as well. Yes! Yes! Come one, come all, was my attitude! The faster I could spread this info to the kids, the bigger of an impact I could make! We were in the process of completing our class and I was going to contact the Brucia family to get permission to use her name & video, then it was just finding a professional to teach my class, colloct a small fee for the instructors time and get him his money! It was with heartbreak that we got the news that our location would be closing in month! Wow! We were almost there, but our owners pulled the plug on our location so we were forced to abort our plans. It was a mission to educate and teach kids about the dangers in the real world, and how to keep themselves safe. It was an epic fail, and once again I was back to heartbreak! I just want the Brucia family to know that Carlie gave so much to all of us, even in her death. I vowed never again, will this happen to one of our children! I am still taking actions to this day to help educate children on the dangers kids and adolescents face in today’s real world. I will again one day, try to start up Carlie’s Class if I can make that happen. Please know after all these years, Carlie is still a thought of mine often and I am so glad and grateful for this website dedicated to her! Together we can change the future! I will be on the front lines to defend our children by arming them with techniques and information they need to survive in this world! Thank you again for doing your part to help, and I hope to keep her name alive as well, by starting this one day. Thank you again and may God Bless all our children!
